Description
Mayor's commentary is comprehensive on details of life and thought in imperial Rome and on Latin diction. His long introduction, or 'advertisement' sets an explosively volatile tone and his whole work reflects his passionate desire to save the modern world through classical wisdom.
Volume 1 consists of Mayor's original introduction, John Henderson's new introduction and bibliography, the Latin text of Juvenal's Satires and Mayor's commentary on Satires I-VII. Volume 2 contains Mayor's commentary on Satires VIII-XVI.
Henderson's introduction, geared to the needs of serious user and occasional browser alike, guides the reader in the use of Mayor's commentary and explains its gestation and the mode of thinking it sought to incarnate. A substantial bibliography on both Mayor and Juvenal is also included.
