Description
David Hockney is one of the towering figures in the current art scene and of the last half century and more. Since his celebrated earl debut on the public stage at the Young contemporaries exhibition in 1961 he has commanded both critical and popular attention to a degree unlike any of his contemporaries and matched, you might say, only by an artist like his beloved Picasso. When still a student he recognised he could do away with the notion of a particular style and, over sixty years, his work has been extraordinarily varied not only in its appearance but also in what it is made of. He secured a reputation as a talented printmaker alongside one as a groundbreaking painter and draughtsman, but to that range of talents he has, over the years, added photography, stage design, video and digital picture-making, not to mention art theory and writing. -- Foreword.
