Description
"Who doesn't love the classic architecture that defined Chicago as a modern city in the popular imagination? Places like the Board of Trade building, Merchandise Mart, or the Carbon & Carbide tower fire the imagination for the city as it was just coming into modernity and grappling with new vistas of height and possibility. Here, Joseph Gustaitis profiles Chicago's Art Deco skyscrapers with economy and verve, making for an exceptionally accessible tour of some iconic sites. Gustaitis goes deeply into the stories of the buildings, architects and developers, construction and financing, zoning, and engineering, as well as the raw materials of a skyscraper"-- Provided by publisher.
