Albion Motors, established in Glasgow in 1899, became Scotland's most successful motor-manufacturing company. Initially a car factory, it began to specialise in the production of trucks before the First World War and continued to build them until 1980. It merged with Leyland Motors in 1951, and from 1968 onwards it was part of the ill-fated British Leyland combine. 'The Albion', as it is affectionately known to thousands, survived the collapse of the British truck market in the 1980s, re-emerging in 1993 as a major components supplier with plants in Lancashire as well as in glasgow.This is the first detailed history of the company, examining its vicissitudes through the eyes of management and of shop-floor workers. Business progress and the strategic management issues involved are considered in depth, covering Albion's existence both as an independent company and as part of British Leyland. The author, who has written extensively on the Scottish motor industry, is uniquely well placed to write the history of Albion, having worked in financial management at both the Albion and Bathgate plants of Leyland Truck and Bus.The book is illustrated throughout with fascinating photographs of the vehicles produced by Albion from the earliest days, of the workforce and managers, and of some of the manufacturing processes. One of the advantages of new technology is that it enables hard-to-find books to be made available again. We are pleased to present the first fruits of exploring John Donald's classic backlist of academic titles. Not only do we hope to add more titles to the list but look forward to bringing in other titles suitable for this system as time goes on.
