A comprehensive analysis of the Mexican agrarian sector's development from the times of Zapata to the neoliberal reforms of the 1990's. The work shows how the Mexican State, despite its long agrarian reform policy and pro-peasant rhetorics, has constantly served the interests of large-scale commercial farming over those of peasants. The Mexican case is also placed in the larger Latin American context and the theoretical debates in peasant studies.
