Irwin, Mark
From Library Journal
"I am troubled by the integrity of things," Irwin says. The poems in his first full-length collection display an attachment to objects that trouble the reader as well, and his perception of an object seldom offers any new insights. Irwin seems caught up in an outdated view of "Poetry"such abstract poetic concepts as desire, beauty, truth, and art predominateand so the cumulative impression is cliched. Irwin's strength is his ability to enter the psyche of mythological figures, but too often he uses these personae to hide from himself rather than to achieve understanding. To use an image from another poem, it would appear that the poet would rather "make" a woman than take the chance of "loving" one. Irwin will have to take far more risks before his vision will catch up to the craft these poems contain. Rochelle Ratner, formerly Poetry Editor, "Soho Weekly News," New York
