Book by Lieberman, Laurence
From Library Journal
With his recent books, Lieberman has become America's "tourist poet"; this time he takes us along on a Caribbean adventure. The isles of Haiti, St. Lucia, Antigua, and Dominica come alive in his attentive, visually vivid lines. Describing his travels on buses crowded with livestock, squawking children, street hoods, and con artists and his meetings with street people--the hungry and lost souls who haunt quiet corners of otherwise noisy outdoor markets--he creates a nearly surreal Third World. Exotic geographies often lead to a poetry that is superficial, too easily taken. This work, however, is much more than a mere travelogue. The poems are full of humor and wonder and an ever-present evidence of a resilient human spirit, even at their darkest. Lieberman has an eye for detail and a feel for what is around and behind the simple and everyday.
