The first edition was published in 1971 by the Clarendon Press, Oxford, as volume two of the Index to British Bibliography , a series bibliography of studies on the bibliographical and textual study of British authors and books and the history of the book in Britain from the earliest printing through 2000. Supplements appeared in 1992 and 1999. Here Howard-Hill adds works not previously available to him and extends his coverage to 1995. He has also rearranged the text and provided more exact subject descriptors, making the index both larger and more precise.
