Two short sequences, "My South" and "American Scenes," provide a setting for the more personal poems that follow. Among them are elegies for a musician friend, an unknown poet, even his first piano teacher, Mrs. Snow, who reappears both in the poetry and in a prose memoir. Her lessons recur as well, for Justice is as attuned to sound as any poet writing today, blending a light-handed manipulation of rhythm and rhyme with conversational tone: "Hear the gulls. That's our local music./ I like it myself; and, as you can see,/ Our sunset maker studied with Bonnard." The prose, though interesting, is mere shadow to the poetry.
