Description
The origins of four different school systems in the Federated Malay States are traced. The purpose is to show the manner in which the exigencies of British rule and the attitudes of their officials influenced the development of the four school systems. The period covered extends from 1874, when British control was first introduced into the Malay States, to 1941 when the entire Malay Peninsula along with the rest of South-East Asia came under control of the Japanese Military Command.
