Begun as an experiment in 1978 and co-edited by Ulla Colgrass and Anne Barrett, Music magazine included critical reviews and articles, as well as interviews which gave the artists a chance to speak for themselves. Shedding light on the musicians interviewed both as performers and as private personalities, Colgrass explores the creative process in order to understand the external forces that help produce a great performer. Including interviews with composer R. Murray Schafer at a distant wilderness lake in Ontario, with pianist Glenn Gould on the telephone, and with Elly Ameling over a hasty breakfast in a noisy hotel restaurant, the volume breaks down the traditional stereotype of the aloof musician by revealing their rich and deeply personal worlds and their passion for other art forms and pursuits.
