Based on extensive field work among the Sidamo of Southwestern Ethiopia and close analysis of the basic structure of their society, this enlightening study explores how the Sidamo's interpretation of destiny--especially disease and misfortune--is expressed in the spirit cult that forms asubstantial part of their ritual.
