NEW! Book Rental available, beginning in Fall 2016

As part of our continuing effort to minimize the cost of course materials and improve the range of services offered to students, Labyrinth Books is partnering with rental vendor Sidewalk to offer many higher-priced textbooks for rent. You can view both purchase and rental prices on course sites in Blackboard and have the option of then shopping online or coming to the store for in-person counter-service. View full rental terms and conditions.

How does it work?

To rent in-store:
Come to Labyrinth Books during business hours and a staff member will walk you through the simple process. You will need your Student ID to create an account; you can then use any payment method to cover the rental cost.

To rent online:
If a book is available to rent, you will see the rental price listed directly below the purchase price on the Blackboard reading list for your course. Add rentals to your Book Bag just like purchases. When you check out, you will receive one confirmation email for any books you have purchased, and a separate confirmation email for any rentals. You'll then receive an "Order Ready" email within 24 hours — usually much faster — when your rentals are ready for pickup.

Why are some books available to rent and others are not?

Labyrinth's Guaranteed Buyback Program already saves you a lot of money if you don't intend to keep your books at the end of the semester or year. We've only made books available to rent if the savings are comparable to or greater than what you would get by participating in the Buyback Program.

How do I return rented books when I am finished using them?

It's easy. Bring your book(s) to a bookseller in our downstairs coursebook area, just like you would for buybacks. The bookseller will then clear your account.

What if I drop my class or change my mind and need to return my rented book early? Can I get a refund?

Refunds for rentals are similar to returns for purchased books. Through the add-drop period (the first two weeks of the term), refunds will be given in kind as long as all the conditions below are met. After the add-drop deadline, no refunds can be given.

Refunds will be given according to the following conditions:

  • A valid cash register receipt must be presented.
  • New books must be in original, pristine condition unopened and unmarked.
  • Shrink-wrapped, boxed texts, software or packages must not be opened.
  • Any and all accessory items (CDs, information cards, pass codes, etc.) originally contained must be included and unopened/unused.

Can I write or highlight in my rented book?

Yes, but keep it reasonable. Minimal highlighting and writing is accepted as long as text on pages is not compromised for future use. Books must be returned in good condition, suitable for the next student to purchase or rent.

What if my rented book gets damaged or lost?

If your book gets damaged beyond reasonable use, lost, or stolen, your options are as follows:

EITHER: Pay the difference between the rental price and the student purchase price of the textbook (i.e. if you rented the book for $50 and the student purchase price was $95, you would pay an additional $45 to the bookstore rather than returning the book).

OR: You can acquire a replacement copy in as good or better condition to turn in to the bookstore as a replacement for the lost or damaged book.

Can I use student aid to rent my books?

Yes! The easiest way is to use your Student Charge account when paying for your books. If you rent your books online, you can pay using your Student Charge account or Paw Points. If you get your rental in-store at the coursebook counter, you can pay using Student Charge, Paw Points, cash, check, or any major credit card.

If you have a scholarship or book award from an outside organization (i.e. Coca Cola or James Patterson Book Bucks), please ask to speak with a manager about applying those funds to your rental books.

Will Labyrinth hold rentals?

Unfortunately, we cannot place holds on any coursebooks — for purchase or rent.

Rental Terms and Conditions

Rental Agreement

You understand that you are renting (not purchasing) the textbooks listed above and must return them to Labyrinth Books no later than Saturday, January 28th, 2017. Additionally, you agree to the following policies, as applicable:

Rent to Own — If you decide to purchase the rented textbooks, you may (at any time prior to the due date) notify the store and pay the difference between the rental price already paid and the full Labyrinth student discount price of the book(s). At this point you will own the book(s) and no further action is required.

Non-Return Fees — Failure to purchase or return rented textbooks by the due date will be considered intent to purchase. Your Student Charge account will be charged the difference between the rental price already paid and the full Labyrinth student discount price of the book, as well as a non-return fee calculated as 25% of the Labyrinth student discount price.

Textbook Usage — Minimal highlighting and writing is allowed. Books must be returned in good condition and free of excessive damage. Excessive damage is any damage that would prevent another student from reasonably being able to use and gain the full learning value from the textbook (water damage, mold, missing covers, missing pages, destroyed text on pages, and the like). Books returned with excessive damage will prevent a successful rental return, and you will be charged the difference between the rental price already paid and the full Labyrinth student discount price of the book (new or used depending on the condition prior to rental).

Refund Policy

  1. A valid cash register receipt must be presented.
  2. New books must be in original, pristine condition unopened and unmarked.
  3. Shrink-wrapped, boxed texts, software or packages must not be opened.
  4. Books must be returned no later than 6PM on the final day of the Add-Drop period in order to receive a full refund.

Return Procedure — Please return books when your classes end. All rentals must be returned by the due date to the coursebook counter. Once your books are returned, your account will be cleared and you will be emailed confirmation of a successful return. Early returns are welcome if classes end prior to the due date.
