How does it work?

If you bought your coursebooks at Labyrinth, we guarantee we'll buy them back at the end of the academic year. Simply bring your books, your student ID, and your original receipt to our downstairs coursebook area during buyback hours, and Labyrinth will guarantee 25% back on each book bought as new and 20% back on each book bought as used.

New books must be in "like-new" condition (no writing, torn pages, or damage) at time of buyback. Some exceptions apply. Any title that is ineligible for the guaranteed buyback price will be clearly marked in the Blackboard reading list. If a book is ineligible, Labyrinth buyers are often still able to make an offer at market value.

After buyback, your total savings amounts to 55% off new books, and 67% off used books.

Your buyback payout is calculated using the book's list price, not the discounted price you paid. For example: say the list price of a book is $100.00. If you buy a new copy at Labyrinth you will pay $70.00 ($100.00 list price less 30% student discount). If you sell the book back, Labyrinth will pay you $25.00 (25% of the original list price). So in total, you paid $45 — that's a 55% savings off the $100 list price.

If you bought a used copy instead, you would have paid $52.50 ($100.00 list price less the 25% used book discount, less your 30% student discount). If you then sell the book back, Labyrinth will pay you $20.00 (20% of the original list price). That means your total savings was 67% off the $100 list price.

If you choose to receive your payout in store credit rather than cash, we'll add a 10% bonus.
Given on a gift card that never expires, your store credit payout is the best value — especially if you have another semester ahead!

Can I still sell back books if they are written in / highlighted?

Books that were purchased as new must be in "like-new" condition (no writing, torn pages, or damage) at time of buyback in order to qualify for the guaranteed buyback price. Books purchased used may have minimal highlighting and/or writing, but they must be free of excessive damage. Excessive damage is defined as any damage that would prevent another student from reasonably being able to use and gain the full learning value from the textbook: water damage, stains, mold, missing covers, missing pages, destroyed text on pages, etc.

Which books are ineligible for the buyback program?

There are some exceptions to the buyback guarantee. Any title that is ineligible for the guaranteed buyback price will be clearly marked in the Blackboard reading list.

If a book is ineligible, Labyrinth buyers are often still able to make an offer at market value. Example reasons for ineligibility include but are not limited to:

  • Books with consumable elements, like workbooks that are meant to be written in, or books that contain access codes for specialized software
These items are meant to be used by the student and designed to be used only once.
  • Books with CDs or DVDs; unbound (loose-leaf) packages; chemistry modelling kits
We are not able to individually verify that the components are working and complete.
  • Certain large format textbooks which are going into a new edition in the coming year.
If a new edition of a given text is announced by August, the book will not be eligible for buyback in the following academic year. If a new edition is announced later than August but before February, the book will be eligible for buyback for students who purchased the book during the fall semester. It will not be eligible if purchased in the spring semester.
  • Textbook packages; i.e. a textbook and workbook shrink-wrapped as a package and sold as a single item, or multiple texts packaged together and sold as a single item
Often we are able to make an offer on one or more components within the package, but the complete package is not eligible for the guaranteed price.
